Leapfrog - A Realtime Visitor Tracking Contribution

The ability to watch what your store visitors are doing is very important.

So much so that I included a user tracking contribution in a recent article. But understanding the ebb and flow of visitors is difficult because the data is always presented in a very dry format. Plus you have to keep refreshing the page to see if anything has happened recently.

I decided that what osCommerce really needed was a dynamic, realtime, funky visitor tracking contribution.

So I built one. Its called Leapfrog and it’s quite addictive to watch!

Download it for your site, have a play and let me know what you think.

Introducing Leapfrog

Leapfrog is a refreshing way to look at the behaviour of visitors in your store. It lets you see what people are looking at on your site in realtime in a graphical format.

Leapfrog can:

  • Be installed in minutes, like any other contribution
  • Update automatically - no need for constant page refreshes
  • Be a more visual and fun way to track visitors

How It Works

Think of Leapfrog as a ladder. Recent visitors are at the top of the ladder, older visitors are at the bottom.

Whenever a visitor interacts with your site they are moved from their current position to the top of the ladder. When a visitor stops clicking, they gradually slide down the ladder as more recent visitors battle for the top spot!

The last three clicks for each visitor on the ladder are displayed, along with their IP address, total number or clicks, refering URL and total time on your site.

  1. Very original and interesting contribution for OSC, thanks for sharing it.
What is the URL for the store that your leapfrog demo is getting its data from may I ask?

  2. Hi Jack,

    Thanks for the comment!

The link in this article shows Leapfrog running in DEMO mode. All the data is being generated artificially at random. I created this so you can get a feel for how it works, without the need for a real shop to be busy getting hits. Otherwise people might see the demo and wonder why nothing is happening (if the shop happens to be empty at that time).

If you download the contribution and install it on your store, you will be able to click around in the shop, and then flip back to Leapfrog and see your clicks being animated.

Hope that answers your question. If you can think of any improvements I can make then let me know.

    Ed.

  3. Wow this is AWESOME!! Well done!
